Provincial Laws Regarding the Use of Hand Held Devices
Ontario –The ban on using hand held communication devices and hand held electronic entertainment devices began yesterday. This ban will include hand held mobile phones, hand held texting devices, hand held email devices, iPods, MP3 players, DVD players, laptops etc. Hands-free (e.g. Blue Tooth) communication devices will be permitted. Hand held GPS units are also banned but you can use mounted GPS units. The only exception to the ban is if you are placing a 911 call. From October 26, 2009 until February 1, 2010 police will give warnings instead of tickets. After that fines can be a maximum of $500.
Newfoundland/Labrador –It is illegal to use hand held phones while driving. Hands-free phones are permitted. Fines range from $45 to $180 and the driver receives four demerit points.
Nova Scotia –It is illegal to use hand held phones or text messaging devices while driving. Hands-free devices are allowed. Fines range from $50 to $200.
Quebec –It is illegal to use hand held phones while driving. Hands-free phones are permitted. Fines range from $80 to $100 and the driver receives three demerit points.
British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan are considering similar laws.
For your safety it is strongly recommend that any time you are driving that you turn off hand held communication devices and hand held electronic entertainment devices as soon as you enter the vehicle. This will lower the temptation to look at or use them.
